Environmental protection issues have become more and more important in China in recent years. The report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China’s Jinshan "Silver Mountain" concept pointed out the importance of building a more beautiful China, enabling improved production, a better living environment, and a stronger contribution to global ecological security. Conserving resources and protecting the environment is a core national policy for China, and domestic environmental protection has created an upsurge in the need for waste sorting.

In China, traditional methods of domestic waste disposal such as landfilling and incineration, present potential challenges.  Landfill waste takes a long time to break down and there is a groundwater pollution risk. Direct incineration requires power, sorting, and crushing, as many materials do not burn in entirety. Air pollution is also inevitable with this type of waste disposal. The key problem that needs to be addressed is how to sort, shred, separate and burn waste, shredding being the most critical part of this process.

Waste shredding is synonymous with very severe working conditions. It requires high torque, high load tolerance, high power, and if the material becomes stuck, you need to reverse the rotation direction of the cutting shaft immediately. The work site is harsh and demanding, so the maintenance requirements of the machinery and equipment need to be minimal.

As the shredder cutting drive is a direct drive, there are added requirements for the drive motor. It is necessary that it:

  • can withstand high loads
  • be maintenance-free
  • have a high torque output
  • be highly reliable

In the past, most Chinese manufacturers used mechanical drive and reducer methods. As the treated material is often unstable, the motor often needs to switch direction. It is difficult to attain the same torque output in both directions with this method. When compared to mechanical, the flexible nature of the hydraulic drives manage these needs more effectively.

Another method environmental protection equipment OEMs use is high-speed axial hydraulic motors with gearbox reducers, replacing previous motors with high-speed motors. However, in real-world applications, there is a delay when switching directions, impacting machine efficiency. Multi-stage deceleration is also commonly used, and efficiency is only 80%. With high-speed motors and gearbox reducers, shredders need a larger power source. Also, the machine’s width and length is greatly increased due to the structural arrangement of the motor acceleration and deceleration.

With 20 years of successful experience in the shredder industry, Poclain’s low-speed high-torque motors, with its unique cam-lobe structure, have good low-speed stability while maintaining maximum torque output. The low-inertia design quickly switches directions. The directly driven drive shaft does not require a reducer, and transmission efficiency reaches 95%. This gives the OEM a shorter, more compact high-power solution with a smaller diameter. The closed system design, after on-site installation and commissioning, only requires simple maintenance.
